Summary
Structural failures may be more dramatic, but roofing failures are more common. This month Barry Slayden from the Garland Company, a BEC Charleston Board Member, will moderate a discussion with two forensic roofing experts, Joe Shahid and Eddie Polk from Applied Building Sciences. Mr. Shahid and Mr. Polk will share their combined experience on why roofs fail and how we can prevent common problems. The presentation will focus on three primary areas of concern and related code requirements: (1) edges—especially for low slope roofs and parapets, (2) penetrations, and (3) flashing.
In addition, we’d like to hear from you about any roofing questions you may wish to pose to Mr. Shahid and Mr. Polk for them to address in their presentation. So give it some thought now and give us some feedback when you register.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze roofing edge conditions for both commercial and residential roofs, including asphalt shingles, low slope roofs, parapets, and code changes.
- Analyze common penetration failures for both commercial and residential roofs, including roof-mounted devices, vents, and fasteners.
- Understand proper flashing installation for both commercial and residential roofs, including step flashing, counter flashing, galvanic corrosion, and code changes.
- Identify code and certification requirements for roofing manufacturers, fabricators, and installers— including ANSI/SPRI ES-1 for metal edges used on low slope roofs and parapets.
