Summary

The effective use of thermal insulation in the building envelope requires recognition of the factors that affect thermal performance and the relationships between laboratory data and field performance. The broad spectrum of materials available for use in the building envelope and factors that affect in-situ performance will be discussed. Relationships between laboratory property data, assembly testing, and performance in the building envelope will be presented. An introduction to advanced materials will include vacuum insulation panels, nano-materials, and phase-change materials. Interactions between thermal insulation and water transfer will be identified using WUFI to provide examples.

Topics

  • Performance of Various Insulating Materials
  • Quantitative Data and Durability Issues Related to Thermal Insulation Performance
  • Hot Box Data and Building Simulations to Assess Insulation Performance
  • Advanced Insulating Materials for the Building Envelope
