A Full-day seminar focused on building enclosure detailing of large wood-framed mixed-use and mixed construction type buildings.

The intent of these sessions will be to share the presenter’s collective experience and insights into building enclosure selection, design, detailing, and execution. He will be offering practical tips and highlighting the critical decision points along the way that lead to successful projects.

About Our Speaker

Michael Aoki-Kramer is the Managing and Founding Principal of RDH Building Science’s Seattle office, which he opened in 2004. Prior to joining RDH, Michael worked on technical code and policy development for the City of Seattle’s Department of Construction and Inspections, and was a key member of Seattle’s Green Building Team, which established LEED Silver as the baseline sustainable building standard for all City buildings over 5,000 sf. His clients range from low income and market rate housing providers to developers of spec office buildings and the Bullitt Center, the greenest commercial office building in the world. Michael has extensive experience with wood frame multifamily construction, having overseen RDH’s building enclosure consulting efforts on nearly a billion dollars’ worth of apartments and condominiums over the past 13 years in the rainy northwestern United States. Michael is a regular presenter on building enclosure topics and appreciates all opportunities to share his passion for sustainability and optimizing building enclosure performance.

  • Identifying the critical barriers controlling the flow of heat, air, and moisture (liquid and vapor) through building enclosures and sets the stage for the day.
  • We will review local building enclosure design loads, descriptions and hallmarks of wood frame building enclosure types, pros and cons of each system.
  • Provide a framework for system selection and conclude with some recommendations for successfully managing design and construction.

  • Focus on wood frame multifamily building enclosure detailing, beginning below-grade and working our way up through the building.
  • We will be looking at various below-grade and at-grade assemblies
  • Wall assembly details for penetrations, transitions, exterior insulation
  • Window selection and detailing
  • Decks and balconies
  • Roof assemblies
    and finally a look at recent research regarding the performance and different types of air barriers on the market today.
