Summary

The presentation will analyze recently performed water testing on different types of sliding glass doors and windows on a multi-phase high rise project in South Carolina. The water tests of the different door and window assemblies did not uniformly perform to keep the water out. A description of the different failures will be given followed by an analysis and a solution of how to best keep the water out. The analysis will also discuss failures due to design and failures due to construction issues associated with work performance and project management. The relationship between detail design and constructability will be discussed to emphasize that good design on paper must also so be relatively easy to build otherwise risks of failure increase.

Learning Objectives:

  1. A detail description of how the different door and window assemblies failed the water test:
  2. An analysis of the failures to discover solutions to the water intrusion:
  3. The solutions to the different causes are very different; the right cause is critical to determine:
  4. The review of design details must include an imaginative review of how it will be constructed on the site. A design that is difficult to build increases the risk of failure:
