Summary

Fluid applied air and water resistive barriers are quickly gaining professional and market acceptance, supplanting traditional sheet based barrier systems. Many manufacturers have entered this growing market. However, contrary to initial impressions, there are significant differences between competing products, which are rooted in each product’s particular chemistry. These differences affect substrate compatibility, re-emulsification risk, UV exposure, application procedures, accessory requirements, and fire safety. Before the AEC industry embraces fluid applied systems generically as a panacea for resolving all air and moisture intrusion issues, persons responsible for the design and construction of effective building enclosures need understand the critical differences within the spectrum of products sold as fluid applied barriers.

Our presenter, Dave Kimball, will begin the program with a thorough discussion of fluid applied air and water restive barrier systems and then conclude with a hands-on demonstration of some of these products.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the history of fluid applied air and water barrier systems, including technical development and market introduction.
  • Gain an overview of different fluid applied systems available in the marketplace, including Building Code considerations and comparisons to more traditional sheet based barrier systems.
  • Compare advantages and disadvantages of different chemical formulations used in fluid applied systems, including re-emulsification risks, reinforcement requirements, substrate compatibility, and fire safety considerations.
  • Develop critical awareness of options available for fluid applied air and water barrier systems and apply it to making project appropriate selections.
