- Summary
Successful building enclosure assemblies are built up layers that appropriately control the flow of heat, air, moisture, water, and vapour. Each of these control layers has specific requirements with respect to continuity, structural support, location relative to other control layers and the climate that the building is exposed to. A high percentage of failures in the operating performance of building enclosures can be traced to lack of continuity or inappropriate connection of these control layers. This presentation outlines a process that building enclosure professionals use to review construction documents with the goal of avoiding performance problems. The focus will be on larger buildings rather than wood frame.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Understand the concept of “control layers” in building enclosure assemblies.
- Understand the critical requirement of the layers that control heat, air, vapour and water in enclosure assemblies.
- Learn, and practice, a process of critical design review of assemblies and interfaces between assemblies.
Biography
Mark is a Vice President in the Building and Facilities Division of Morrison Hershfield, a multi-specialty engineering firm with offices across North America. He is a professional engineer with over 30 years of experience in building performance assessment, forensic investigation, testing and design. Currently resident in Vancouver, Mark’s career has included projects in all kinds of climate regimes from the arctic to the tropics. He is widely published on building science issues including: durability and performance of building enclosure assemblies, moisture control, Indoor Air Quality, ventilation and managing the health impacts of mold in buildings. Mark has presented to many professional and lay audiences on building science issues.
