Dr. Mike Hatzinikolas

Dr. Mike Hatzinikolas is one of the foremost experts of masonry in Canada. He is a structural engineer who has received his M.Sc and Ph.D degrees through advanced research in masonry.

For 25 years, he served as Executive Director of the Canadian Masonry Research Institute (CMRI) providing advice and expertise to engineers, architects, building officials, government agencies, suppliers and contractors throughout the construction industry.

“Dr. Mike” (as he is known across Canada) is the owner of FERO Corporation, a manufacturer of engineered masonry connectors. Currently, he is also an adjunct professor of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Alberta. He has co-authored four textbooks in masonry design and has published over 120 research papers and technical manuals. The most recent textbook became available as of September 01, 2006. Dr. Mike has prepared and published a large number of details for exterior wall assemblies from cavity and veneer walls to stucco and siding. He also has developed a computer program for designing load bearing masonry walls, masonry beams, slender walls and shear walls with openings.

The seminar will address the following issues:

  • Factors affecting the performance of Metal-Stud Masonry Veneer Wall Systems
  • Moisture Management
  • Effects of ingress of precipitation
  • Effects of Construction Tolerances in Buildings
  • Effects of Deformation and deflection of the Main Structural Components on Cladding Systems
  • Preventing Mildew and Mold Formation in Exterior Walls
  • Designing for Corrosion Resistance
  • Designing for Differential Movements
  • Designing for Temperature Fluctuations
  • FERO Products – Masonry Connectors and Accessories

There are many issues over the last number of years regarding the performance of exterior walls as it relates to environmental separation and the durability of exterior wall systems.  This presentation will address all factors affecting performance of exterior walls and will provide recommendations as to the best ways to safeguard against mold, corrosion and thermal performance.

Continuing education credit is available for architects, building officials, and others. Seating is first come first served. Q&A session will follow presentation.
