The question whether to add insulation to a historic structure, what type of insulation to use and how to install it are complicated issues not to be taken lightly. There is no one size fits all answer. Join us this month as a panel of local design and construction professionals, energy auditors, and an historic preservationist engage in some thought provoking and robust conversation on the topic to help promote learning and share many lessons learned from the field. There is little hard research available on the subject. The Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation makes mention of adding insulation to historic structures but provides little practical guidance on exactly how to do it and how to avoid problems. The United Kingdom has done some research and offers guidance on some materials they suggest be considered but the materials, such as wool insulation are not your typical off the shelf products found in the US. The discussions will be moderated by Dennis Knight, P.E. Dennis will facilitate the discussions by posing questions drawing on his experience working in and around historic structures in Charleston for the last 30 years and in performing energy audits and conditions assessments on commercial historic structures.
