Summary

Coastal living has its benefits but many in the Lowcountry area are well aware of the impact of increased flooding even on sunny days. Why is the sea rising? Who is impacted? What can be done? This presentation will address the science and strategies. Key items will include the global sea level rise condition, the impact on our local communities and the resilience strategies to address the changing landscape that greatly impacts our existing and future built environment, our transportation infrastructure, the health and safety of our residents, our commerce, and our wildlife and natural habitats.

 

 

Learning Objectives

Mr. George will discuss Sea Level Rise:

  • Global Sea Level Rise and the science behind it.
  • Impact on communities (people, homes, businesses/economy, roadways/infrastructure, wildlife/natural habitats/ecosystems)
  • The Aquarium’s Resilience Initiative for Coastal Education (RICE) which is focused on the southeast.

Mr. Lindsey will discuss the Sea Level Rise impact on the City’s:

  • new and existing built environment
  • infrastructure challenges – sea walls, roadways, drainage, bridge clearance for ships
  • protection of historic sites – Fort Sumter, etc.
  • City of Charleston’s Sea Level Rise Strategy and implementation

 

About Our Presenters

 

Albert George has the honor of serving as the first Director of Conservation for the South Carolina Aquarium and is also the Co-Founder of the Amazon Reforestation Project. Prior to the Amazon Reforestation Project, he worked as the Director of Education for Georgia Aquarium Inc. He has also held appointments as a Management Consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton and as a Research Associate for the Center for Marine Environmental Science and Biotechnology. Mr. George completed his B.S. in Marine Biology and Chemistry from Savannah State University and the P.R.E.P. program at Yale University concentrating in physiology cellular molecular genetics, and then completed a program of study from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government/MIT in addition to completing a Master’s of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also the founder of the Georgia Green Economy Summit and the Resilience Initiative for Coastal Education (RICE) which has worked to promote green economy growth and resilience strategic planning in the state of Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

 

Jacob A. Lindsey is the Director of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability for the City of Charleston. He advises the Mayor and City Council on matters of city planning and directs the operations of planning, zoning, architectural review, urban design and business services.

In his previous role, he was the Director of the Charleston Civic Design Center, and served as the City’s chief urban designer under Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. In this role, he was instrumental in achieving key projects and policies while continuing the City’s legacy of outstanding urban design.

Prior to serving with the City of Charleston, Lindsey was the founder of Fabric Urban Design, a consulting firm providing design expertise to governments, non-profits and private developers. Previously he served as a top advisor for Timothy J. Keane, who currently serves as Planning Director for the City of Atlanta. Lindsey began his career after earning a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia.

Lindsey is a full member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and an accredited member of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
