Summary
Floods are the #1 natural disaster in the United States. All 50 states have experienced floods. Due to climate change and other factors flood events are increasing in number and intensity. To protect the health, safety and welfare of homes and their occupants during a flood event, homes shall be built in compliance with local, state and federal codes and regulations. This course describes floodplains and their potential hazards to buildings. The portion of a building below Base Flood Elevation needs to be designed with flood openings to reduce the hydrostatic pressure on the foundation walls; if not moderated with flood openings this pressure can cause considerable damage. The course explains the difference between engineered and non-engineered flood openings and the difference in their ability to protect the structure. It also explains the differences between wet and dry flood proofing techniques and when best to use which technique. Complying with flood protection requirements affects the insurance rate. The course will discuss flood protection solutions available to existing structures.
